iPad Apps

So I started sharing some of my favorite apps with you guys earlier in the year (such as Evernote and Dropbox), I then moved into sharing some web sites that categorize apps for easier searching. It really was only a matter of time then until people started making apps for finding apps, and as it turns out, there are a couple of them. In this article in The Chronicle, they review several apps, both free and not, that help people find other apps. I haven’t personally used any of these. I will regularly check the app store and quickly look at the most popular listings, but that is about it. Call me old school. Anyway, let me know what you guys think of these apps in you decide to check them out.

It’s Gotten Ridiculous

So you remember when you used to love that band that no one else had heard of, but then they got famous and you didn’t really like them anymore? I feel like the same thing has happened with this whole “colleges creating cheap, open access, online alternative certification” programs. I thought it was really cutting-edge and cool when MIT did Open Courseware. It was inventive when they then added some alternative certification with MITx. Then, of course, Harvard had to copycat with Edx. Then pretty much all the big ones joined in with Coursera. And now I feel like I can’t throw a stick without hitting another one. So this week Purdue kicks off their own global online education project. Its online, cheap, you get a certificate, etc etc. I think I am going to stop writing about these. Trust me, they are everywhere now. I’ll just let you know if anything changes in this trend.

That said, there is still hope….

However, once in awhile a great unknown band will shine, and in education there are still fresh ideas, sometimes right under our own noses. For example, Michael Karnjanaprakorn, who graduated from VCU, won a bunch of money playing poker, and now is starting Skillshare.

There is an instructor at Va. Tech named John Boyer who does this. I think I might have mentioned him in another weekly newsletter as he also gets famous Nobel Prize winners (Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi) to virtually talk to his class on occasion. We have discussed the idea of MOOCs recently in this newsletter, and this guy would be a great person to talk to in regard to this topic. And as it turns out, he is doing a live chat today at noon for The Chronicle. If you don’t already have lunch plans, this might be a neat chat to be apart of.

If Harvard can’t afford journals……

Harvard University’s Faculty Advisory Council sent a memorandum recently to all faculty which opened with “We write to communicate an untenable situation facing the Harvard Library. Many large journal publishers have made the scholarly communication environment fiscally unsustainable and academically restrictive”. The memo continues by encouraging Harvard researchers to both submit their work to open-access journals and to resign from the boards of non-open-access journals. This memorandum has many in the academic community asking if it’s time for an open access model.

…but Harvard can afford online courses though

Harvard and MIT last week each ponied up $30 million to create a new platform for free online courses. It is called Edx, and it seems to be somewhat derivative of MITx, which we have discussed often in this newsletter. This announcement continues to feed the buzz about different models of higher ed, and some are saying we will look back at this time as when the alternative-credit model took off and changed higher ed.

App Inventor

I know a lot of us are using iPhones and iPads, and I mentioned a few weeks ago some possible solutions for making your own apps. But there is another mobile operating system out there, it’s called android, and probably more than a few of you are using it. Well recently The Center for Mobile Learning at MIT, released a product called App Inventor which lets plain folk (not programmers) develop apps for the android OS. I haven’t used it yet, but it appears to work in the same way as another product from MIT, called Scratch. I have used that one, and it is awesome. It allows even young children to create computer programs by using “blocks” of code. I have used it with my son to develop programs for his motor legos, and he loves it. Both of the MIT products have entire sections devoted to educational uses on their web sites. Definitely worth checking out for any educator.

Discourse

I learned about a new product being developed at UVA this week. It is called Discourse, and it looks really cool. It is not supposed to be ready until this summer, but it will allow course instructors to lay out conversations that happen in online discussion boards in a much more useful way. I know we have all either used discussion boards in our classes or have participated in discussion boards where the usefulness of the activity kind of falls flat. I think this tool could be a step in the right direction.

Big News in VA

“Virginia has its first official full-time virtual school, and more, including one in Chesterfield County, could follow in the near future”. If you missed this news in the Richmond-Times Dispatch. Stop what you are doing and read this article. It talks not only about the Caroll County (approved) request, but also mentions Chesterfield County Public Schools where many of our graduates will go. The online learning phenom continues to grow. Are we prepared?

iPad Apps

It’s funny really, I thought when I started this newsletter I would once in awhile talk about an iPad app I thought was good. But as it turns out there are so many good ones, what is more useful are organized lists of apps. So this week we feature education apps listed by learning goal. For example:
I want my students to record and edit video on the iPad
I want my students to create presentations on the iPad
I want my students to annotate course readings on the iPad
etc, etc.
This is actually a pretty useful list for any educator working with these devices.

Coursera

An online education company based out of Stanford gets $16 million in venture capital and partners with University of California, Berkley, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton to offer free online courses. These courses are most likely going to be MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses), and there is no shortage of opinions on this company out on the interweb. Whatever people think, this is another prominent move in the same direction in higher ed as MITx, and other open online initiatives.

Fairfax County considers Virtual High School

This article not only discusses Fairfax County’s discussions around developing its own virtual High School, but also does a good job at discussing virtual learning trends here in Virginia, including recent legislation from the Governor, and some eye opening numbers in regard to students involved in virtual learning in this state (where many of our graduates will teach). The article also presents some issues with online learning as well (you are welcome Dr. Mulloy).

Quick Pic of the Week

While my trip back from Vancouver turned into a travel nightmare, resulting in having to rent a car in DC at 2:30 in the morning last Thursday, I will always remember the good times, and the world class assortment of food trucks in Vancouver. Pictured below is Japadog. Ate there multiple times.

iPad Faculty Learning Community

Last week was a busy one as many faculty were finishing up their CTE iPad proposals. The Teaching and Learning department is convening today to discuss iPad usage in their department. It seems as though iPad-mania continues to sweep through the school. Then just yesterday, Jeff Nugent from CTE sent me this ELI brief which describes the findings from three Indiana University (IU) faculty learning communities that spent the 2010/2011 academic year studying the effectiveness of iPads for teaching and learning. This is a must-read for faculty who are beginning to explore the affordances of these devices.

University of Phoenix: Disruptive Innovation?

Michael Huffman sent me this article last week, and seeing as though many of us have read DIY U, I thought it would be of interesting. It nicely articulates the differences in schools like University of Phoenix and schools like VCU, discusses the different business models and then examines the possible lasting effect of these types of online universities on higher ed. The author does a good job of explaining disruptive innovations and also mentions programs like MITx.

Just two quick things

When reading through articles this week, I was surprised to see two headlines. One was “Review: International laptop program does not improve education“, and the other was “Not all students benefit from online learning, educators say“. Both titles are sensationalized to put a certain spin on the stories, and I feel are misleading. I have said numerous times, and feel this is a popular opinion, that just putting technology into students’ hands will not improve student achievement. I also absolutely believe that online education is not right for everybody. In my opinion, it is how technology is used that can possibly improve education, and while online learning is not right for everyone, for some it can be very effective. I think I am going to stop subscribing to that newsletter.

Vancouver is a foodie’s paradise, i have managed to eat at Gorilla Food for lunch 3 out of 4 days. Only organic raw vegan, and delicious

Quick Pic of the Week

VCU Moving to Gmail

I know most of you have already heard but VCU is changing their email platform to gmail very soon. I have been getting a lot of emails about this, and wanted to provide everyone with a resource for answers. Technology services created a WordPress page for the project here. Once you are on the web site, you will see links to sub pages such as “When?“, “Who?“, “Why?“, and “Ready?“. This will answer a lot of your questions and I advise everyone to go to the “Ready?” page and make sure you have your ducks in a row for this migration (ducks, migration, get it). If you have questions that are not answered on this site, please feel free to email me.

Making sense of 4G

We have all heard about the new 4G speeds being promised with new smartphones and other devices. However, things are a little more complicated than you would think. Dr. Sarkozi recently sent me this article, which does a pretty good job at explaining the evolution of mobile data speeds and how they currently shake out.

2012 Emerging Technologies Institute

After months of planning and work, I am pleased to announce that our 2012 Emerging Technologies Institute is now accepting registrations. The Emerging Technologies Institute will be an annual program offered by the VCU School of Education to address current professional development needs of Virginia K-12 educators in the area of instructional technology. Courses are taught online on open-access platforms and will remain accessible after the course concludes with the aim of facilitating on-going collaboration between participants and instructors, and leading to informal communities of practice. Each course is limited to 16 participants who will work together to explore the latest instructional technologies and design effective projects for use in their classrooms. These courses are open to our pre-service teachers as well, and I encourage faculty to pass the word along to students who may be interested. You can check out the course offerings here.

VCU Technology Services along with the VCU libraries is sponsoring a Tech Fair today in the Student commons, in the Richmond Salons from 9 am till 2 pm. Representatives from Atomic Learning, Blackboard, Apple, Dell and others will be on hand to discuss new technologies and offerings from their companies. Free food and lots of give-aways. Might be cool to go and check out some of the new stuff coming out. The workshops by Atomic Learning may be of special significance to us here in the SOE, as this tool provides a ton of online tutorials you could use, or you could assign to students in your classes.

DS106!

So there is this guy at University of Mary Washington who has a class on digital storytelling (DS106). His name is Jim Groom. It is a totally open, online class. He needed money to upgrade to a new server because so many people were taking this course. He decides to use Kick-Starter (online crowd-sourced funding service) to try to raise about $4200. He does this in less than 24 hours, and currently has raised over $11,000. The Chronicle picks up the story and publishes this, which is probably the place to start to untangle this story in more detail. This is a fascinating story about MOOCs, the possible future of higher ed, and pushing the bounds of higher ed in what can be done. Also, if you have any interest in digital story telling, or using this with your classes, his class site is an invaluable resource. You can also pledge $106 dollars and get a ds106 t-shirt and pair of socks. I am writing my check now.

Making iPad Apps

I get questions about this often, and currently there is not an easy way to do this without some programming experience. However, I have recently run across some tools that could be used to create various types of apps. I have not personally tried any of these yet, but thought i would pass them on in case anyone is interested. Here they are: GameSalad, The LearningMag, and LiveCode by RunRev. I think these also create web apps, and apps for android devices. If anyone knows of others let me know.

VCU iPad Pilot Project

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is currently accepting proposals from faculty for a new iPad initiative. The proposals are due April13th. CTE will not only provide a classroom set (up to 20) of iPads, but will also assist in consulting. Pilot studies will be done in the fall of 2012, with the opportunity for continuance. We (the SOE ITC) are already positioned to support projects like this, and will assist as well in designing and supporting these projects. As a school of education, I feel we are well suited for projects like this and encourage faculty to apply. See the above link for more information or contact me.

VCU Online Course Development Initiative

The CTE is also offering an amazing opportunity for faculty to develop online courses, and get paid for it:

The Center for Teaching Excellence is inviting applications for participation in the Online Course Development Initiative for the 2012-2013 academic year. This yearlong program consists of several integrated components that seek to hone faculty expertise through interdisciplinary collaboration, critical reflection, consultation and peer mentoring. Faculty members who engage in the full range of experiences will be in a position to provide guidance and leadership for colleagues within their home school or department related to online teaching and course development.

Applications for this program are due May 1st. See the above link for more information. These spots fill up quick, so get your applications in sooner than later.

Using Laptops in the Classroom

As I have discussed before, technology can improve or detract from student learning. It is never about what you are using, but about how. This article discusses recent research that found 75% of students in the study increased their non-class activities (i.e.. goofing off) when using a laptop. But more importantly it offers tips on how to effectively use these devices.

Single District Virtual Ed Programs

Apparently, this is the fastest growing sector of virtual learning in the US in 2011.This article does a good job describing the need and current environment for these programs. I know Chesterfield County has a big online program, and I believe York as well, and honestly I am glad to see school districts begin to take this on themselves as opposed to for-profit companies. My concerns about for-profits leading this charge, and other concerns about the growth of virtual education, were expressed in an editorial I co-authored in the British Journal of Educational Technology last year. There were other articles this week that focused on K12 virtual Ed, from how to create successful programs to how to measure program effectiveness to legislation in Georgia that could have required every student to take an online course.

Imagining the Future of the University

As I know many of us are reading or have read DIY U, i thought this article would have unique relevance. Rice University hosted a dialogue on “ The Future of the Research University in a Global Age” at the De Lange Conference on February 27-28. This article discusses opinions and ideas from the meeting, and ultimately looks at ways to “hack” higher ed to better meet the needs of students, and what traditional methods in higher ed may no longer be relevant.

More Education iPad apps

It seems as though many of you are interested in finding iPad Apps (you guys know I can see who clicks on the links in these emails, right?). As it turns out another story came across my desk this week with interesting Apps for education. They only mention four, but these seem pretty cool.

LaFountain will facilitate a wide-ranging discussion regarding social media, its implications and the future of digital culture. Free and open to the public.
Why Every University does not need a MOOC

Now, I am not saying VCU shouldn’t explore this, but this article, sent to me by Michael Huffman raises some interesting points. In it, it points out a new model (new to me at least), in which Universities should look at the expertise they already have and build programs around these areas. I know we are all reading DIY U, and I feel the model this article discusses relates to some of the things going on in that book. It briefly discusses how universities look at market-forces, compares them to existing expertise and pilots programs based on the two. It is in the spirit of this model that I am currently re-designing our IT program, and seems to make a lot of sense to me. It will be interesting to see how Universities evolve.

iPad App-apalooza

My friend, Dr. Langlie at Longwood, sent me this google doc which lists educational iPad apps, sorted by content area. It is a pretty good map of current apps in the educational sector, and is organized in a useful way. It might be a good tool to forward on to your students, or any in-service teachers you know. Other articles this week also discussing app usage for elementary or special needs students.

The internet doesn’t increase bullying

I first ran across the work of Danah Boyd about 5 years ago when I was doing research on social networks. She is a senior researcher at Microsoft, and holds a variety of positions in academia. She does great research on young people and social networks. She recently spoke at SXSW (south by southwest interactive conference), and had interesting things to say about bullying and the internet, some of which are detailed in this short blog post. I think this is a good starting point for some of our counselor ed faculty and students, when considering social networking and K12 students.

A few weeks ago, Dr. Mulloy requested that I present both sides of the debate about online learning. This week an article was published that discusses some of the problems we are seeing in online education. This article also talks about possible legislation being introduced to address these problems.
