Single District Virtual Ed Programs
Apparently, this is the fastest growing sector of virtual learning in the US in 2011.This article does a good job describing the need and current environment for these programs. I know Chesterfield County has a big online program, and I believe York as well, and honestly I am glad to see school districts begin to take this on themselves as opposed to for-profit companies. My concerns about for-profits leading this charge, and other concerns about the growth of virtual education, were expressed in an editorial I co-authored in the British Journal of Educational Technology last year. There were other articles this week that focused on K12 virtual Ed, from how to create successful programs to how to measure program effectiveness to legislation in Georgia that could have required every student to take an online course.
Imagining the Future of the University
As I know many of us are reading or have read DIY U, i thought this article would have unique relevance. Rice University hosted a dialogue on “ The Future of the Research University in a Global Age” at the De Lange Conference on February 27-28. This article discusses opinions and ideas from the meeting, and ultimately looks at ways to “hack” higher ed to better meet the needs of students, and what traditional methods in higher ed may no longer be relevant.
More Education iPad apps
It seems as though many of you are interested in finding iPad Apps (you guys know I can see who clicks on the links in these emails, right?). As it turns out another story came across my desk this week with interesting Apps for education. They only mention four, but these seem pretty cool.

Quick VCU Social Tip of the Week
I love Social Media. There, I said it, and this Tuesday VCU’s Media Art & Text (MATX) Program presents a conversation with Marc LaFountain, vice president of support at Tumblr, a blogging platform and social network of 46 million blogs, on Tuesday, March 20, at 1 p.m. in the Commons Theater. LaFountain will facilitate a wide-ranging discussion regarding social media, its implications and the future of digital culture. Free and open to the public. I want to go bad, but will be at another presentation that day in Chesterfield by Harvard’s Chris Dede.
